How to make a wall hanging

I have another quick and easy DIY for you this week except this one doesn’t require a power saw. YAY! Wall hangings are such a huge trend right now and I’ve accumulated a few in the last year so I thought I’d show you the ones I’ve made and how to make them. Quick and easy.

A wall hanging is such an inexpensive way to fill up space on your walls. They're easy to make, too!

They’re awesome because they only have to be as expensive as the yarn you use. I made the one above on a girls night using a stick from the backyard. Like I said, only the yarn has to cost money.

**This image is from Brynne at The Gathered Home, from the home tour she did on her blog. It’s so pretty so if you haven’t seen it, go look.
These little dream catchers in the girls room are a totally different style but I used my same yarn stringing talents to make them. Picture me saying this while winking and pointing my finger guns your way. ; )

The most recent one I made is actually a bit different. Wait for it. I PAID for the base of it. No backyard sticks here. I got real classy with a $2 scarf hanger at Five Below. Do you know that place? Everything is below $5. I’m 99.3% positive that’s why that call is Five Below. (I’m a hundred percent positive, by the way) It’s the best. You should go if you have one near you.

Ok so this cute little scarf hanger came in a shiny rose gold color which is great but I love me some gold / brass goodness. I took it outside and gave it a quick coat. Then I grabbed the extra yarn that I talked about here and cut a bunch of same length strands.

I just folded the yarn in half making a loop at the top. Bent the loop down over the wire (or stick or whatever) and pulled the tails of the string back through the loop like in the picture below.

I finished a whole section and then realized I wanted to flip it because, see the open section at the top of the hanger? (I know it would be easier if I was taking these pictures on what paper but I love this rug so…..)

Anyway, I didn’t undo any string, I just rotated the whole thing and repeated the placement of the string for the other side.

I love how it turned out. Because I rotated it mid project, it got cool layers in it that I didn’t plan for. I also tied a few strings together in a knot for a little more interest.

It’s a little bit of warmth and color on a wall that’s lacking.

It’s the same loop and pull through process I showed you here, that I used on each one of those wall hangings. The stick was free, the embroidery hoops for the dream catchers were thrift store finds and the scarf hanger was $2. I’ve seen wall hangings done with deer antlers as the “stick”. You could use an open picture frame, a piece of copper pipe, an old curtain rod, a wooden dowel. There are so many options. You can add ribbons, pom pom trim, colorful yarn, tulle or whatever else your sweet heart desires. One thing is for sure, you can definitely do this and it can be a super cheap project that can fill a huge blank wall if you need it.

So, do you have a wall (or door) you could use something like this? Can you think of a good “stick” that I didn’t mention? I’d love to hear your ideas or see some finished projects when you’re done. You can always tag me on Instagram if you’re over there.

  1. So I have found your blog twice in two separate link parties; two separate posts.
    Kismet? I think so.
    I love your style.
I am anti-blogger style if that makes sense and yours is so creative and eclectic.
    LOVE.
