An Entryway Update

…..again. Well, hello there! I’m so excited to show you our newest, quick update. I did a refresh of our entryway. Actually, besides wall color, it looks completely different. Keep scrolling to see how to redecorate an entryway!

What do you think?!? I’m so happy with it. Let me remind you of the WAYYY before.

As one of the first projects on the blog, I redid the entryway for
free. You can read more about it here but I mixed up a few paints to get
the wall color, brought some things in for styling and added a shelf to the bottom of the table.
All of that brought the entryway to here: **before I get all excited and forget; this post contains affiliate links.**

Actually is was kind of funny because when I posted this pic to my Instagram, it did really well and lots of sweet people complemented the space, BUT, earlier in the week it hit me. The table, although the perfect fit, didn’t serve any purpose to our family. It didn’t store anything (except for dust) and I realized that the space could serve us much better.

Then, another light bulb moment! These all come on Saturday mornings at like 6am and then my husband wakes up and I bombard him with my plans.  It would be so fun to sell everything in the entryway and redo it using ONLY the money I make from the sales. I love having to work within a budget! It makes me so much more creative!

And so began my quest for an update. I sold the console table pretty much right off the bat to a sweet friend from church. Then I promptly began to plan how to spend the $75 I made.
I decided instead of a table or shelf with another surface for me to dust, I’d build a coat rack. Wood plank against the wall and hooks on top of that. We don’t come in through this door but when we have friends over it will be a nice place for backpacks and jackets.

I bought a 1×8, cut it to the length of the wall, stained it and mounted it the same way I did in this wall desk tutorial. I bought these hooks which were a great price and came in a pack of 5.
If you’re keeping track that’s: 1×8 $8 and hooks $13

Then I moved on to the door. It was a beautiful red but had been that way for about 8 or 9 years. It was looking chipped and tired and was ready for an update. I painted it “foxy” by Sherwin Williams and man is it foxy. It looks a little bright in the picture above but that was with the shine from the outside on it. It’s a great peachy, terra cotta color and looks so good with the rug in there…..and actually every rug in the open space of our house now that I think about it. It’s a great pop of color. The quart of paint was $18.
The rug is one I had previously received from Bosphorus Rugs. They sell one of a kind rugs from Turkey. They offer free shipping worldwide and if you use the code “househomemade15” you’ll get 15% off your purchase. DON’T WORRY! My great grandmother’s heirloom rug that was in the entry way before is now in our room. If you didn’t have a great grandmother with amazing taste and foresight to not get rid of great, old rugs, then Bosphorus Rugs might be a great place to look into starting your collection. This one is beautiful.

Moving on up now. The mirror in the entryway before was great and they are generally great to bounce light. The thing is that this mirror was just reflecting our dark door. It felt heavy.
Light, bright and FREE entryway makeover

I took that down (and will hopefully be selling it in a garage sale I’m having at the end of the month). And replaced it with a picture I took of my husband’s truck. His name is Harold. The truck, not my hubs. Our big kid used to call him “truck named Harold”.  My husband loves him, I love him because my husband loves him. He’s a head turner and a stud muffin and I was happy to include a cool, artsy picture of him inside. Sorry, it’s confusing because we refer to him as a ‘him’….

I had the poster printed at Walmart. It was $14 and the frame was a Walmart special that I painted white. It was $17.

At first, I hung the frame in the center of the wall but saw so much more of the reflection from the window and was bummed to not see the photo when the door was open. So I moved it over and balanced it with a quick wall hanging with left overs from a tassel wreath I made last year.

If you’re still keeping track, that was $70 I spent. I really love the space now. That 11″ we gained from selling the table actually makes it feel bigger in here. It’s brighter. Now I don’t have to dust but can just sweep. So happy.

It’s a great space now. It feels so clean. Clearing this room out actually lead me on a decluttering spree. Hence my first ever garage sale coming up. (If you live in the Denton area and want to come, email me jessica@househomemade.us and I’ll give you the details.

I hope this makeover inspires you to work on a space you aren’t in love with. Think outside the box. A makeover that looks great doesn’t have to break the bank. I know this room is small and isn’t a well used part of our house and therefore making it a cheaper makeover but it never has to be a lot. You just have to be creative with what you have or what you can make. If something in your house doesn’t serve you then why keep it? Figure out a solution and add something that does.

Do you have a space that comes to mind for a possible makeover? Something small and achievable. It can totally be done on a budget. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
