Urban Outfitters Leaning Mirror Knock Off

I am so excited about today’s decor knock off!! Seriously, even if I don’t always act on it, the thought ‘I can make that’ has saved us a ton of money over the years.  When I first saw the leni leaning mirror on Urban Outfitters’ website I thought just that. AND I actually made it. AND it’s actually awesome! This post contains affiliate links.

That’s right, this is mine: under $30

Here is theirs: $139

There are a couple things that are different but I’m so excited with the final result! Let me get into the details.

For this project I used:

(3) 6 ft x 3/4 dowels
(1) 3ft x 3/4 dowel
painters tape
black spray paint
cheapy dorm room door mirror
drill
1″ screws
tiny finishing nails
hot glue

First I cut the dowels to size.  I left 2 long ones as is, 6ft. I cut another dowel (the middle one) to go from the bottom of the mirror to where the others met at the wall. I did not even notice that it didn’t go up to the top on the inspiration piece. In that case, you could just cut the middle dowel to match up with the exact length of the mirror. 49.5″

As for the ladder part of the design, I just made them the same width as the mirror. A little over 13″.

I masked off the bottom 5″ of the 2 6 ft dowels for when I spray painted later.

To attach the short dowels onto the vertical pieces I marked where I wanted them.  One from each end of the mirror and one about a foot up from the lowest rung.

I used a drill to make small pilot holes into the long dowels.

I used a screwdriver to get the screw through the first dowel then lined it up to go into the end of the shorter dowel.

I used a speed square to make sure it was attached at a right angle.

Once all the rungs were attached, I took the whole thing outside for a couple coats of spray paint.

I forgot a picture of this step but as you can see below, the pieces I painted were a ladder with only one leg and then a lonesome dowel.

After it was dry I brought it inside to attach the mirror which would bring all the sections together. I pushed the tops of each dowel against our trim so that I knew it was all at the same height and lined up the mirror with the ladder rungs. The vertical dowels fit perfectly under the frame of the mirror.

I used tiny little nails to mount the mirror onto the dowels in all 4 corners. You could add more for more stability. Then I flipped it over and added a bead of hot glue around the edges to help keep the dowel from rotating.

Here’s the deal. It definitely isn’t the most sturdy thing you could imagine.

But I made it in about an hour (including the dry time on the spray paint).

I made it totally by myself on the floor of the living room.  And you can too! Sturdy, smurdy. It’s cute!

I love it so much and I can’t believe how much it looks like the original.

You’ll notice I did not angle the dowels back to meet the wall up at the top. That never would have happened…correctly anyway. And there aren’t any little hangers on the top rug of the ladder. I just looped a scarf around that one.

But who cares? I saved over $100.

Nailed it.

I hope you love it! Even if you don’t want to make this; hopefully it inspires you to look at things differently. Spend differently. Be inspired by what you see but don’t always jump to make the purchase when there’s another way to get the look. Know what I’m sayin’?
