How to Replace Door Hardware

When I started thinking about a design for this home I knew I wanted to
make things a bit more modern. I’ve shared before that I want black
fixtures throughout. I like for each room to have commonalities to make
the house more cohesive. Hardware and lighting are a big way to help
your house flow. *this post contains affiliate links.

The hardware for this post was given by Schlage. All thoughts and words are my own. Thanks for supporting brands that support House Homemade.

When I saw these latitude door levers in matte black with the century backplate from Schlage I knew they would be perfect. Note: on Schlage’s website you can see all the options for your door hardware like finish, lever or knob style and backplate style. Feels so custom!

Now, I’ve seen many a door knobs switched out in my day but I believe this was the first one I’ve done on my own. IT’S SO EASY! I love my husband and I love when we do projects together but I also love that I can do things on my own. I’ve gotta pass that mentality down. “Girls, today mommy is going to teach you how to switch out a door knob….”

First I took off the old door knob. I was already pretty proud of myself for this one because there were no screws. I couldn’t tell how to get it apart. Look at this beaut.

You know what I did? Googled ” how to remove a door handle without visible screws” BAM! Right away, problem solved. I wallpapered the door with removable wallpaper before continuing with the install.

I installed the latch part. Make sure to face the curved part of the latch toward the door. I did not. I had to fix it afterward. It makes sense though. The curved part of the latch slides right over the strike. (the piece on the door jamb)

Some times you have to use a hammer to tap it in. Make sure and protect the finish by covering it with a washcloth or something.

Once the latch is in, you can install the strike. That’s the curved piece on the door jamb.

Next it’s time for the levers.

Once the latch is in the handles come together one way. This might be trickier with door knobs but the levers can only go in one direction and they are the same up and down so it made it easy.

The only other thing I’d suggest for these levers with the square back plates is to use a level and make sure the plate is squared up to the door before you tighten it down with the screws.

If the back-plate isn’t square, the levers wont be and it will be very noticeable.

That’s it! They look so nice and sleek. Love the modern touch they add to the entry way.

We also got the matching Century Front Entry Handle and Latitude Interior Lever with Century trim for the front door. LOVE THEM! Now I only have the entire house left to do. The door hardware would be easy but I have to prime and paint every door before it gets pretty hardware…in due time. In due time.

So there you go! You too, can install door hardware. Pin the image to save or share:
