Big Girls Room Makeover

Way back in March when we were first home on quarantine I decided to makeover our big kid’s bedroom. I wanted a quick project that I would necessarily have to see/ live in while it was a DIY zone. So I started. I got it almost all the way there but ran out of paint for a second coat (I wasn’t ready to get out and buy something non essential at the time) so things just sat there. I finally finished last week so I wanted to show you! Keep scrolling for tips on how to update a big girl’s room.

Tween girls room. Hanging pendant, moth printable wall art
shake it off wall art. reclaimed wood headboard
This headboard was ours in our room back in Denton. My dad made it. It was King sized at first but I took off the extra boards to make it fit her full bed.
I painted the “Shake It Off” lyrics with extra paint and poster board.
vintage stool as nightstand
I wanted to use the step stool as a bedside table. It was Joel’s grandmothers. I love how she can prop books on the steps.
blue doors, tween girls room
She really wanted bright blue walls so as a compromise I gave her blue doors and trim. When I finished I wasn’t super in love with the shade but she loves it and it has grown on me.
legos on letter tray, pin collection, tween girls room
I hot glued some fabric on to cardboard and framed it as a place to display her travel pins.
The letter tray was my Gran’s and I realized it would be a great spot for the many MANY lego figures that were previously all over her room.
I rotated it and added a shelf to the bottom so that she could have a place for the bigger stuff creations.
tween girls purple and blue room
You might also notice the base boards. I wasn’t ready to rip up the carpet or replace them, I decided to make them look beefier with painters tape and paint, making a band about 4″ above the actual trim.
And see the door? That goes to our attic. It was a plain, flat door.  I added bead board, wood and hardware to it and now it looks old and charming. I love it SO MUCH!!
She’s 9 so floor space to play is still super important. We moved the bed to the wall and left the center for play. I did bring up an extra chair so that she could have another spot to read.
I love this soft, warm view. The moth is a printable on ETSY (linked to it!) and the frames below it are bible verses.
“Fighter verses” from here. It’s a free download workbook for kids from “Get Out Of Your Head” by Jennie Allen. I printed the bible verses for her to read when she’s feeling overwhelmed and nervous. This kid has had a tough spring with so much unknown thanks to Covid 19. I hope she sees them every night and that they become something she remembers.
tween girls sherwin williams ‘origami white’ room
She’s an awesome young lady. She loves her finished room and INSISTS that it will stay clean…..in reality that’s not her style.
