Hello there! This post is pretty straight forward but sometimes you just need to see someone else do something before you’re convinced to try it for yourself. **this post contains affiliate links.
Today I’m going to show you how I painted our new dining room chandelier flat black.
Before I get to the spray painting can we just take a second to admire the dining room transformation? Ahh the power of paint… look at the before:
Oh man, the after makes my heart so happy. There are still a few things to be done so I fully intend to do another post soon.
Back to the topic at hand.
Recently I told you about the modern, clean look I’m working toward with this house. I showed you the new light I got for the mess-of-an entry way.

And to keep that clean-line, matte black look going I looked and looked (with no luck) for something I loved for the dining room. It seems like it wouldn’t be a great option to buy something brand new then modify it. I get it. BUT if you can’t find what you want, but you can make something what you want, then why not? I found this light a long time ago. Before we even moved into this house. Kept searching for another just in case but never found one. It’s a winner.

I love the modern lines of the arms, the glass shades and the down rod. No chain gives it a more clean-lined look. It’s obviously really beautiful in brass, I just wanted a different look.
I put it together. Halved some cotton pads to protect the light sockets.
Tied it to the gymnastics bars we have outside.
If you don’t have gym bars (you could make them, here) or you could hang it from a tree branch, swing set, garage door rails or just set it upside down on cardboard if it can balance like that.
From there I just gave it a light coat of matte black paint.
I’ve shared this before but I don’t have a favorite spray paint brand. I just don’t ever buy a glossy finish. I think sometimes it can come out looking uneven and cheap looking. Satin or matte/flat are my faves.
I left it hanging for a bit to dry but then brought it inside when the skies got grey. It needed one more coat to cover the couple spots I missed.
If this were something that would be handled, like a piece of furniture, I would have sanded it a bit before starting. Because this literally just hangs there, it is fine to just paint.
We actually got a couple days of sporadic rain so I ended up doing the final touch ups in the garage with it standing on the ceiling plate. Also, see the little black blob next to it? Make sure you paint the little caps that go on the screws to install it.
That’s it! It was so easy and so worth it to get the look I was going for.
I will say that trying to spray paint a fixture to be metallic might be a little tougher. Not the act of painting it but to look like a realistic color of metal. If you want to try that, I’d make sure and research the best metallic spray paints. There are tons of reviews you can find on Pinterest.

I think it’s at least a nice reminder that we don’t have to be limited to what’s out there. Seriously, my mind was blown when the light bulb went on that I could pay full price for something AND change it to be exactly what I wanted.
