ORC Budget Kitchen Makeover: Painting Over Oil Based Cabinets

This is my 4th of 6 posts on the One Room Challenge. A lot happened
this week and I’m so excited because it’s finally starting to look like a
room again. WITH NO HUGE GAPING HOLES IN THE SHEETROCK OR ANYTHING!

week 4 update One Room Challenge: Painting over oil based paint | House Homemade

If you’re new to these parts I’m participating as a guest in the One Room Challenge.

I’m taking 6 weeks to makeover our kitchen in the most budget friendly way I know how. Most of what we’re using is second hand or scrap from previous projects and I’ve been sharing every single step over on my Instagram stories. I shared my plans , week 2 progress (or lack thereof), and how I covered our counters in feather finish concrete.

I’ve been sharing on stories that this week I am trying to finish the painting. I finally settled on a beautiful color called ‘Garden Wall’ by Behr.

It’s actually just one shade lighter than what I did on our kitchen cabinets at our last house.

The existing cabinet color is oil based paint and oil based paint is so hard to paint over and get a good strong finish. In cabinets in our kitchen, a good strong finish is what we need.  First, if you’re wondering if your paint is oil based you can test that because its a lot harder of a finish.  Stick the edge of your finger nail onto the paint surface and try to dent it. Oil based paint wont give.

To make sure the paint will stick and stick well here are the steps you can take:

1. Sand the surface. I just used a sanding block and roughed up the surface of the doors.

2. Use a deglosser.  This cleans the project and knocks down any glossy or nonporous surface that may be left. I’m glad I read the back because for whatever reason it said to paint up to 12 hours after you degloss so this step comes right before you’re ready.

3. Prime with a bonding primer. Bonding primer adheres to the surface which hopefully sealed off the oil based stuff for good.

4. Paint with a high quality paint. Satin or gloss is best for cabinets because its a surface that’s more scrub-able.

Look at that power stance. I used this sprayer but I’m not ready to tell you if I’d recommend it or not. I painted our previous cabinets by hand. Once the whole process is done, I’ll decide what I liked best and let you know.

I’m so tired and there’s a very good chance this is our last weekend to work so wish us luck. We’ve got a lot to get done.
