Painted Wicker Basket and Other Easy Basket Makeovers

Hello! Hope you’re having a good week so far. Today I wanted to show you a quick update that I made to the “holds all of our tv stuff” basket.

See it? That big one in the middle? If you look really closely, you can see all of the cords to all of the stuff in the basket. Luckily we’re never actually at eye level..

When I found this awesome desk on Craigslist, I knew that we would need something in the center to store all of the TV components. Not to mention that we weren’t in need of a huge blank space either. I measured and shopped for the closest fit to fill the space. This basket was a lined laundry basket that I found at Homegoods. I took the lid off, took the lining out and put that little scarf in front just to break up all the wood tone.. That’s how its been for a couple years but I wanted to change things up a bit.

One night, I plopped down with some white paint and just started painting sections in a brick-ish pattern.

I used a small paintbrush and only painted the horizontal sections (aaand only the front for that matter. This way, if i get sick of it, I can turn the basket around and leave it or try something else)

If you look closely you can see that I didn’t measure or anything. Just painted and stopped, then painted and started then went down to a new section… I’m not much of a planner when it comes to crafting. Sometimes it’s a bad thing.

I like it! It looks a little more modern, a little more boho.. Different.

A few weeks ago, in Easter clearance at Target, I found 4 color packets of faux suede cording for $.50 a piece, I bought 2 and decided to make them into tassels and use them on this. Aren’t those great colors?

Since these pieces weren’t very long, I just folded them in half until I got down to the length I wanted.

When they were the right size I wrapped a separate 3 inch piece of suede around the top section and tied it tightly.

Then I cut the bottom so bottom part so that none of the loops were connected.

I wanted a few more in a neutral color so I got an extra strand of brown at Joann’s and finished by tying them on to the wicker with little pieces of jute rope.

Not perfect but certainly gives the junk basket a bit more character.

While we’re on the business of painted baskets, the basket with the plant on the left already had that great pattern but I taped off the section at the bottom and painted it bright green for a pop of color.

I also compiled a few more basket painting ideas for you to browse. If you don’t already follow me on Pinterest, you should and if you do, you might have seen these come across your feed.  Please pin these ideas from their original source. Thanks.

These were thrifted planters from Homemade Ginger were spiffed up with just a little bit of time and paint. These kind of baskets are ALWAYS available at thrift stores. Go look, I promise.

This one from Tried and True is so colorful and  happy! I can see this holding toys or blankets. It would even work on a smaller basket, holding a plant.
This Kilim-Inspired painted basket tutorial is an easy way to try out a fun new color palette quickly and inexpensively. It's so simple to make!

This one has no paint involved but look at that basket of tassel goodness! Such a good way to give a fresh new look to something you see every day.
