Happy Labor Day! We’re headed home 5 pounds heavier from a sweet, long weekend with family at the river in Flippin, Arkansas. Like, really, that’s the name of the town. My dad, mom, her twin sister and my uncle, all of the kids, their significant others and 4 grandbabies. Lots of sun, water, laughs and love. It was a sweet way to say goodbye to summer….Flippin’ Arkansas. 🙂
Also, happy first Monday of the month! It’s Global Styler time. Every month at this time, I get together with Casa Watkins Living, Up to Date Interiors and A Designer at Home and we bring you globally inspired styling tips, tricks and DIY’s. This month, we’re talking fall.
If you live in the south, you know that it’s still 472 degrees and there’s a very good chance it will be for another month…BUT FALL IS MY FAVORITE TIME OF ALL THE TIMES. No, really.. Windows open, football on tv, chili, sweatshirts, less frequent leg shaving. Best time ever. : ) So since it’s the best, it will start to look like and feel like autumn inside our house while we wear shorts and sweat for a while longer.
Today I’m going to show you how I made henna inspired pumpkins for our fall decor this year.

For this project I used:
a thin white oil based paint pen
a thick white paint pen
pumpkins. I used this one in green. This size in fawn and orange. You could use real or fake (use old ones. Spray paint them if they look tired. Reuse reuse!)
Ok, I was inspired by the look of henna. It’s traditionally Indian. It’s from the henna plant that’s used to create a dye as ink to draw temporary art on the body.

It’s an art form with such intricate designs. I didn’t want to cover our pumpkins, just to mimic some of the repeating shapes I saw when I looked up inspiration.
I just started at the stem part of the pumpkin and began to draw.
I used the thin and the thick marker to get a little more variation in my lines.
Don’t worry too much about how each line looks. You can add little details to it if you make a mistake.
I also wanted to designs coming up from the bottom of the pumpkin as well. These designs also reminded me of zentangle. I used to have an art lesson that I taught my middle schoolers where we used zentangle. It’s basically filling a page with line drawings. Doodling and repeating patterns. Super relaxing and mindless. Something that’s ‘mindless’ makes it a favorite of mine.
I actually did the large green one last. I had to make sure I liked what I was doing before I took pics.I love how they turned out!
It was a super simple project. All three pumpkins took me about 15 minutes to finish.
I’m so glad I bought these pumpkins as my base. I am in love with this color scheme. It fits in so well in our house. I mean, look at them with that painting in the background…
I am not really into buying seasonal decor every year. I have some stuff that’s 5ish years old and then I have stuff that my mom passed on to me. Stuff that you decorate with for 2 months out of the year is just not my favorite to spend money on. I am so happy to have these though.
PS I don’t really decorate for Halloween either. Fall is my jam, Halloween is fun but too much extra work for even less stage time.
When I get our other fall things out of the attic, I’m inspired to try and update them to make them more my style. Closer to these pretties.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this quick pumpkin DIY. It makes me SO DANG HAPPY for fall!! Oh my goodness, bring it on.

Jessica I adore these pumpkins! I had a henna tattoo in high school and I felt super cool the entire 2 weeks I had it. LOL!!! Love to see it now on pumpkins!
We have a Smackover in Texas! He he. I'm with you on recycling older Fall decor to fit our styles. It's fun to transform them. Your henna pumpkins are just lovely! I had an Egyptian teacher that had just returned from a wedding in Egypt and was covered in Henna. So pretty!
