Hey Yall! I wanted to show you this super quick and easy wall hanging I made for our little dining room makeover.
I was looking back at older pictures of this wall and found these two. For a long time the wall had a gallery of plates. It worked because the dictionary page wall was very simple and symmetrical.
When I decided to change up the dictionary page wall, I wanted the wall behind the table to be a little more simple. I try to be intentional about not having too many gallery walls. Just a personal preference… Anyway, I reused the Ansel Adams from the brick wall and brought in the framed pictures of the girls from Hawaii.
It worked but I still wasn’t totally sold. So while I was knee deep in redoing the table, I decided one extra project was no biggie. What else was I gonna do while the table dried? Laundry?……pshhhh.
For this project, I was inspired by Lauren Williams’ tapestries. She’s amazing and these tapestries are so much more intricate and beautiful than what I did. They’re inspiring and when you don’t want to spend $900, I think what I did, is a nice, loosely based representation.
I already had scrap fabric from a blanket I bought at an estate sale. I love hobnail blankets. They’re so pretty and they usually have fringe… Enough said.
It was a scrap of blanket because I’ve already used it in multiple projects around here. I made a big pillow case for this body pillow that’s usually on our loveseat in the front room.
I also cut off some fringe for these pillow covers I made with a sweet friend last fall.
Such a good purchase right? Ok back to the wall hanging. I measured the wall and decided what size I wanted the piece to be. I used a piece of scrap 1×2 we had in the garage and cut it to the correct length. The 1×2 is what the blanket will hang from.
I used fabric scissors for a clean edge because I didn’t hem it or anything. I could have but, ehhh.
To make it a little more interesting, and more organic like the inspiration, I cut the bottom in an asymmetrical, curvy line. AND used some scrap fringe for a little extra detail.
I just hot glued the fringe right back onto the cut edge.
After that, I used my ole favorite. DYE. I had olive green left over from another project. (I talk about dye projects in this old post… actually, here and here too. See? I love it.
Poured it into a plastic container, added hot water…
….and dipped the bottom of the blanket in.
I wanted it to be splotchy and natural looking but I also wanted a little ombre action happening. For that, I dipped it down a little more than a quarter and immediately lifted it out so that only the fringe part soaked for around 10 minutes.
I didn’t rinse it or wash it or anything. You’d need to do that for clothes or something you’d use but for the wall hanging it doesn’t matter if there’s extra dye in it.
Once it dried, I stapled it onto the 1×2 that I quickly stained the same color as the table.
I used 2 screws which I had already drilled into the board before holding it up to the wall (since I only have 2 hands). Then used a level to make sure the piece was straight.
And tightened down the screws.
I am so happy with how it turned out!
It’s still simple but is a little more casual and relaxed than it was before.
If you don’t have a blanket to cut up, you could use a placemat, a curtain or a table runner and dip it the same way. The wall hanging above my desk is a placemat. How cool would a dipped, neutral one look?
This would also be a really great way to spruce up an old throw pillow or throw blanket on your sofa (in that case you’d rinse the extra dye though.)
I’m so happy with this space now and the wall hanging really helped. I love how the burlwood frames tie in with the wood of the wall hanging and I’m so glad I made that wavy cut.
I love getting new stuff but it is so fun to make something out of nothing. A big impact piece of art for $0. My kind of project… Let me know if I can answer any questions for you. It is a completely achievable project.
