One Room Challenge Week FIVE and Dip Dyed Decor

One week left!!!! Weeeeeeee! I’m so excited! Here’s a little preview of the room:

Thursday, May 11th (week 6) – The Finale! Reveal the room!

I have things still on my to do list but they’ll all get done.  Today, I want to show you one of my favorite projects for the room.

I dip dyed a few pieces of decor and I’m in love. If you’ve been around House Homemade for a while you know that my love for dye runs deep.  On the design board for the room I had that cutie-tootie unicorn bust:

See it? Well, in my tendency to be really, extremely cheap, I just couldn’t fork over the $20. Plus I love a good DIY if I can swing it so, I set out to create my own…..head art?

My little Nickerbean and I were wandering the aisles of Target when I saw this on clearance. It was perfect. I loved that it was wood and loved that it was on clearance. Obviously.

First of all, it was pretty fun to assemble and would have looked great as is.

But I mixed a packet of this dye. Poured it in a bucket. And dipped the sculpture in.

Oh my love. 

The longer I left it in, the darker it got. I tipped the bucket to get different pieces of the wood wet. I flipped the sculpture over to get a little ear and antler dye-action.

It looks so cool if you ask me. My pumpkins could not understand why we didn’t cover it in pink glitter like the one in the picture on the box. Then they couldn’t understand why I only partially dyed it. SHAME ON ME.

Here it is in all it’s purple glory.

I also dyed the edges of a round piece of wood that will become a lazy susan.

I even used a medicine dropper to get some splashes of dye.

Once I got the layered look I was going for, I let it dry and sealed it with mod podge.

If you look in the mirror’s reflection, you can see the lazy susan with tons of tools and stuff I’m using the finish the room. I’ll show it to you again next week.

Let me just tell you, it was really hard to practice restraint and not dye everything in sight. This is all I did. I was so proud of myself. Things could have easily gotten out of hand.
