Modern Sun Porch Makeover

Hey yall! I finished up the One Room Challenge see our exterior renovation here and am gearing up for holiday stuff but in the meantime I thought I’d show you a recent e-design project I did. I was so excited to work on this room.

It’s a great space with great windows and that ceiling is dreamy! This room opens up to their kitchen but also acts as a entry / mudroom space and it’s where the dog hangs out when the family isn’t home.

I called it a sun porch because that sounds really charming, ya know?..  It’s great that the room already has defined purpose(s). That’s the first step. The next step is making it as functional as possible for those purposes.

I picked out some cool modern wood hooks for a leash, a jacket and other things that might need to be waiting by the back door.
On one of the walls, I suggested adding a long narrow bench for seating while putting on shoes to head out. This way they could get rid of the ottoman they didn’t like.
If you’re interested in something like this, you could buy one (here’s the link) but you could also make one pretty easily using a 2×6 and some hairpin legs. Here’s a tutorial I found. And hairpin legs are here.
Wicker baskets slid under the bench could help conceal shoes.

But another option would be a table like this with some drawers for shoes would be cute beside the sofa.

A little table would be place to drop keys in a small bowl and a table top for a pop of color with this cute lamp.

I found some cute art work that would look good stacked in some open wall space.

I like the vintage feel of this area rug. It’s busy enough to hide dog hair and spills. Rugs are a great way to add such a fun pop of color to a room.

They said they were open to a new sofa (the old one is basically the dogs bed) and I thought about an outdoor sofa! I figure they can be easily cleaned. The cushions can be flipped and replaced if needed. I love the style of this one and I think it might be a great solution to the problem. DO NOT LIMIT YOUR OPTIONS WITH TRADITIONAL USES FOR THINGS.

As for paint, I thought it would be nice to do a fresh coat of creamy, light paint. This swatch is SW shoji white. I feel like the computer doesn’t represent it well…Make sure and go get a swatch to really see it.
On the board I marked this: sw opaline as an accent color. I was thinking it would be so pretty as a door color but also would be great as the ceiling. I suggested doing one or the other. Not both.
I’d also leave the baseboard trim the white to match the rest of the house and paint the ceiling crown to match the walls.
The tv unit felt heavy for the space so the most cost efficient thing was to try painting it first but it also feels a little big as well.

You could sell it and find some kind of narrow entry way table to fit that wall space. Something like this would be great.

Note: Things like this are easy enough to find on places like Facebook marketplace.
She was a little worried about balancing the wood tones from her stained cabinet kitchen. I told her not to worry about that. This design has enough wood accents that I think it would be just fine opposite the kitchen.

I’ve been getting updates on the progress and it makes me so happy!!!

One more time with the before:

And now!

Look at how much brighter the tv cabinet is! Makes the room feel so much more open. The light blue door is so cheery and the space looks so much more inviting. They’re working toward the sofa now and the space will be complete.

I just love being able to give someone a plan of attack for their space. It’s so cool to give you the tools to do it yourself. Seriously makes my day when I see pictures like this!
